Am I Eligible?

Home Forward apartments are meant for households with limited income. To find out if you qualify for one of our apartments, read below.

1. Look Up Your Income Level

Using the table below, find the row for your household size, and move right to find your annual household income range. Then look at the top of the column to find your percentage. Your percentage number measures your income in comparison to the average family of your size in the Portland area.  Example: A household with 2 people, earning $34,000 a year is above 30% of the Area Median Income but below 50% of the Area Median Income.

The limits listed above are for subsidized programs.  There are slightly different limits for non-subsidized programs.  If your income is close to the limits listed above, please speak directly with each property for their specific income limit.

Home Forward administers other forms of rental subsidy programs such as Section 8. For more information, please click here.

2. Search for Housing

Income limits are listed in the property description for every apartment on this website.  If your percentage number is the same or lower than the income limit shown for that apartment, then you are eligible to rent it.

3. Know Your History

Like other landlords, we do background screening for all applicants.  This involves checking:

Landlord References: We’ll need to see good references from the places you have lived for the past three years.  If there is a good reason you can’t provide these, we may be able to use other types of references.

Property Debt: We check every application to see if you owe money to a previous landlord. If so, you may need to pay the debt in order to be approved for residency.

Criminal History: We have specific guidelines at each of our properties regarding serious crimes. We check the criminal records of every applicant.

For more information about applicant screening requirements, please see the document titled “Home Forward Screening Criteria for Residency” in EnglishRussianSpanish and Vietnamese.

4.  Requirements for Public Housing

Many of our apartments are subsidized, which means that you only pay 28.5 - 31% of your income as rent.  These units have some additional requirements for residency.

Home Forward welcomes all immigrants and refugees in our housing programs. You can learn more here.
