(No Longer Current) Waiting Lists to Open July 9-12 at 23 Public Housing Apartment Communities

Please note that the waiting lists discussed in the following news item were open in 2014 and are now closed.

Home Forward is opening waiting lists at more than half of its public housing apartment communities between July 9 and 12.  The agency organizes public housing waiting lists by apartment community and bedroom size.  The waiting lists opening are at 23 communities across Multnomah County, and the mix includes lists for one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments.

“We hope everyone who needs affordable housing will take advantage of this opening,” said Steve Rudman, Home Forward’s executive director.  “We haven’t had as many lists open since we converted to site-based waiting lists, and it will be some time before these lists open again.”

Home Forward typically opens waiting lists for its public housing apartments when the wait time is between 12 and 18 months.  After an opening, new applications can cause wait times to climb to more than 10 years.

Public housing apartments are deeply subsidized, with residents paying between 28.5 – 31 percent of their income for rent.  Basing rent on a percentage of income means they are affordable to people who have very low incomes, such as seniors living on social security.

The application process is online.  Applicants may choose of up to three waiting lists.  Positions on the list are ordered by preference and then by random lottery.  At six of the communities, waiting lists have preferences for employment and education and for seniors and persons with disabilities.  In addition, one community, Schrunk Riverview Tower, is reserved for seniors or persons with disabilities.
