Tistilal Village in Portland’s Portsmouth neighborhood officially celebrated its grand opening on June 3. In attendance was Portland Mayor Keith Wilson, Native American Youth and Family Center (NAYA) CEOscar Arana (Chichimeca), Home Forward CEO Ivory Mathews, Portland City Council Homelessness and Housing Chair Candace Avalos, and dozens of other partners and champions of this new development.

“Whenever we embark on new projects, it is this day, the grand opening, that I most look forward to” said Mathews. “Not just because today marks an important milestone for us as organizations. But because these days signify that we are one step closer to making our collective vision of growth and opportunity for all people a reality.”

Home Forward provided eight federally-funded property-based vouchers to Tistilal Village, which will make rents deeply affordable at around 30% of a resident’s income. This highlights Home Forward’s commitment to community-driven housing solutions. The resource will be available to current and future tenants of Tistilal Village for decades to come.

This Native-led project includes 58 new affordable housing units and is a full redevelopment of the original 34-unit building first constructed by and for the local Native community in the 1970s.

The redevelopment engaged existing residents and local community members to ensure an intentional, community-driven and trauma-informed design, which features Native American and Indigenous artwork and buildings powered by solar panel arrays to support sustainable energy consumption.

“This shared belief in strengthening one another and coming together is why Home Forward has partnered with NAYA to share eight Property-Based Vouchers with the residents of Tistilal Village,” says Mathews, “With these vouchers, Home Forward is making a 20-year, multi-million- dollar commitment to this community— a commitment that will support residents today and for generations to come.”
